Fabulous Foods: Salem City Cafe

During a recent visit to Salem County I had the opportunity to dine at the recently opened Salem City Cafe in the historic City of Salem. Under the direction of the Main Street Program, Salem is currently going through a revitalization and nothing helps more than a good restaurant. Housed in a building dating back to the 1770’s, the owners, Debra and Michael Foglietta, have successfully created an upscale environment by combining a beautifully modern decor and an exciting menu while maintaining the historic character of the building. The Foglietta name is synonymous with Philadelphia, Michael’s uncle Tom was a legendary Congressman and U.S. Ambassador to Italy.

I had the very best Ahi Tuna salad I've ever had in my 42-year life! If you can get to this place, you will be pleased.

Dear Mike and Debra,
Just a note to thank you sticking your neck out and starting up the Salem City Cafe. In a sea of mediocre area restaurants the Salem City Cafe is truly a welcome relief. We love the atmosphere and the genuinely friendly greeting we always receive when we visit you. Salem is near and dear to our hearts. Dale was literally born a half a block from your restaurant at the original Salem Memorial Hospital (now the Fenwick Building) and went to grade school in Salem. Both of us graduated from Salem High School Class of '67. The Salem City Cafe is definitely an anchor in center city Salem and now it's hard to imagine it not being there. We both remember when your cafe was Fahrner's Beef House. Then it became the Garwood House. Our fathers, now gone, remembered when that area was an open air farmer's market and a hot spot on Saturday night! The transformation you have made to that place is stunning and we appreciate it. We could ramble on for a long time and probably bore you to death so we will end just by saying thanks for being there. You are truly appreciated more than you know.

With sincere best wishes,
Dale and DeeAnn Harris

Hello Debra,

My whole family and I were at the Café on Mother’s Day for the brunch. I wanted to share with you that we all enjoyed a wonderful dining experience. The food was superior and the waite staff couldn’t have been better. The Salem City Café is a unique combination of big city cuisine and ambiance complimented with lovely gracious people (your husband, yourself and your staff) which creates a welcoming feeling of family. It’s not just the food that makes you want to come back…

Best regards,
Rhonda Gage, Pennsville

The Salem Café is such a wonderful addition to Salem! Our City has had some rough years and with the vision of Debbie and Mike for this really unique restaurant to sit in the center of our town offering a fabulous menu is such a blessing. I love to show off our ‘treasure’ when we have company visiting or someone who’s never been to the Café. I can honestly say I have never been disappointed with my food and the wait staff is the best!
